Patients with very high prescriptions typically 8D or above are often told laser surgery is not safe for them, because the amount of corneal tissue that would need to be removed would leave the eye structurally weakened. Glasses at this strength are thick, optically distorting, and a constant inconvenience.

ICL surgery implants a thin biocompatible Collamer lens inside the eye between the iris and natural lens, through a micro-incision of approximately 2.8 mm. No corneal tissue is removed at all. Using the EVO ICL system, prescriptions up to -20D are corrected, UV protection is built into the lens material, and unlike laser correction the lens can be fully removed or exchanged at any time.
